Military Gerber - "You must buy two things tonight, a Gerber and a notebook" were some of the first words I heard from my machine gun section supervisor. It was my first day in my new platoon and only my third day in the Navy. My friend Mac and I hit the road to the Seven Day Store at Camp Lejeune and did just that. They had a wall of Gerbers, Leathermans and SOGs. We both settled on the Gerber suspension. The leader in our class is specifically Gerber, and the suspension was affordable. I carried my Gerber suspension for about five years and used it on two 18 month deployments overseas. The handles have a unique grid design that is easy to clean with castor oil and a cloth. It also reduces weight and adds texture to the battery box frame. The case itself is made of metal, so the scratch pad won't cause cases to fall or break.

The tools themselves are made of stainless steel and I guarantee that with a lot of use and abuse they will not rust. In fact, in all my time and love for the block, I can't remember a single time I cleaned the rust off.
Even though I bought the block blind, I like the lock design. They use a traditional locking design that ensures the devices never fail in use. The locking mechanism requires you to grasp and pull down on the tab on either side of the lock. Once you turn it off, you can turn off any device exposure.
The Gerber suspension is short, and as you can imagine, the tools are also short. That includes the blade and the saw and those are the only two things I wish were longer. Cutting something thick requires a lot of sliding and takes a long time.
A saw will do more damage than a sharpened blade. The split blade makes short work of most thick ropes, but the saw cuts slowly. I remember being an unappreciated boot of a picker digging a struggle hole with my power tool and saw trying to cut the roots and it would take forever.

The rest of the tools are basic and not difficult to use. Like most multi-tools, the Suspension knife blade is functional but clunky and doesn't do much more than basic functions. You may still need a knife on the block. The knife has a sheep's head design which makes it a bit safer to use without stabbing yourself.
The rest of the devices are very basic and the drivers in particular proved to be extremely convenient for everyday use. Life is hard when you need a gun and you don't have one. The drivers included in the suspension are strong and durable, work well with the ergonomics of the device and are nice and easy to drive.
The scissors are very small and the MRE opens quickly. They are also incredibly strong. You can even cut fabric and boot laces without much effort. There's no substitute for the dreaded squirrels, but in a pinch, they work.
The real star of the show is the spring plush. The fact that they are spring loaded allows you to work with one hand, which is very useful when your hand is holding everything.

The clamps double as wire cutters and trim them neatly with thin metal. They completely cut through thick zip ties. When using zip ties, using a knife is a bit dangerous, and wire cutters are safe options for removal.
The teeth in the pliers are true bias and make removing jammed feed tray covers from the M240 a quick and easy job. (Sorry for the small arms maintenance techniques.)
When I got out of the Marine Corps, I gave a lot of gear and stuff to my Marine recruits. I didn't think I needed a Vickers M240 sling or half a dozen cleaners, broken cartridge extractors and green McMap belts. The one I gave was a Gerber block.
